Often we accept that, like a snake or a sword, one particular end of every staircase is far more dangerous than the other. If you’re standing at the bottom looking up, you must assume the head of the serpent lies above the landing. And if you’re at the peak, staring into the abyss at the bottom, you’re certain the blade’s threatening tip is steps below.
I contend the middle is much more frightening. Whether you’ve chosen to go up or down, the spine tingling purgatory of possibility is upon you. Rise or fall, the unknown of each step beyond shall haunt your heavy tread.
